Dimas Sánchez y el “Tambor Mayor”, Jesús Cepeda en
BOMBA & DRUMS, concierto jazz/bomba y taller de percusión.
EL jueves 13 de julio a las 7:00 de la noche, DIMAS
& CEPEDA se presenta en el Café Teatro Punto Fijo, Centro de Bellas Artes,

Dimas Sánchez, baterista y percusionista residente
en la Florida y Jesús Cepeda Brenes, folklorista y maestro de la bomba
puertorriqueña, tendrán un explosivo encuentro en tarima cuando la bomba se encontrará
con el jazz y el jazz con la bomba.
Completarán el quinteto el maestro Luisito Marín en el piano, David
Cuevas en el bajo y William Morel en tenor saxo.
Antes del concierto, a las 5:00 de la tarde, los
interesados en ampliar sus destrezas en la batería y el barril de bomba,
tendrán la oportunidad de tomar un taller magistral con DIMAS & CEPEDA, y
luego disfrutar de la presentación.
Según nos explica Dimas, "En este taller se explicarán los de ritmos de Bomba Sicá, Cuembé,
Yubá y Holandé, además de la Plena, así como ejemplos de estos ritmos con la
batería acompañando al barril. Luego del taller tendremos la oportunidad
de escuchar una presentación musical con ejemplos de algunos de estos ritmos.”
En el concierto el público disfrutará de jazz con
sabor boricua, una verdadera fusión de nuestra bomba con la diversidad que
ofrece el jazz. El repertorio incluirá, entre otros, temas
como: Big Chief- Un blues de New Orleans estilo second line mezclado
con plena; Hanging In, una pieza con introducción de straight ahead jazz y
luego sube a Bomba sicá. La famosa, Armando's Rumba, también en Bomba Sicá y temas
de la producción de Jesús Cepeda, Mandingo Bomba Jazz. “Y por supuesto habrá espacio para jammeo con
los colegas que se encuentren en el público o los que hayan tomado el taller
previo”, asegura Dimas.

Dimas
Sanchez began playing percussion and drum set in Puerto Rico, where he was
born. He started playing salsa music professionally at age 14
playing. Later on, other influences like Jazz, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and
Puerto Rican folkloric music started shaping his musical taste.
He has studied with Tony Sanchez, Angel "Cachete" Maldonado , Keith Copeland , and Ignacio Berroa. Some of the instruments he focuses on include drum set, shekere, bongo, timbales, congas, bomba barrels, djembe, plena panderos and other world percussion.
His musical experience includes styles such as: Jazz, Bomba, Plena, Salsa, Samba, Bossa Nova, Blues, Rock, and Latin Jazz. In Puerto Rico, he has performed with luminaries David Sanchez, John Benitez, Richie Flores, Juancito Torres, Angel “Cachete” Maldonado Hector Veneros, Anthony Carrillo, Edsel Gomez, Jimmy Rivera, Rolando Morales (percussionist for The Lion King), and artists Lunna, Marisol Calero, Olga Guillot, and Lucecita Benitez. He also has had the opportunity to perform with the “Taller de Jazz Don Pedro” where he learned to play Jazz. In 1985, he began playing with the premier bomba and plena group "La Familia Cepeda". With the Cepeda ensemble he learned the best of Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms, and traveled to Spain, New York, and Guadelupe where the ensemble shared the stage with Irakere, Xalam and Ray Barretto.
Among the international festivals at which Dimas has performed are Mundo Latino (Paris), SunFest (West Palm Beach), Clearwater Jazz Festival, Toros y Salsa (Dax, France), Folkloric Festival (Palma de Mallorca), Cultural Festival in Guadelupe, and many others.
He also participated as a Drum Clinician and Pearl Drums Artist in the Contemporary Drums and Percussion Summer Camp 2008 and 2010 in UCF.
Dimas traveled to Florida in 1992 and immediately began working with rock, blues, jazz and Latin groups as a percussionist. Some of the artists with whom he has worked in Florida are Adalberto Santiago, Hector Casanova, Giovanni Hidalgo, Ismael Miranda, Marvin Santiago, Sophy, Akangana, Rico Monaco & Sol Sons, The Xavier Cougat Orchestra, Iba A Se, Opus Mundi and now with Fusion Beat and Trilogy Latin Jazz.
